PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds sells 1m copies after two weeks in Early Access • Eurogamer.net

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has sold 1m copies on Steam Early Access, developer Bluehole Studio has announced.

That’s very impressive for a relatively small budget game that’s only been available for 16 days and is still in beta.

Even more impressive is that the game came from humble beginnings. The titular PlayerUnknown, whose real name is Brendan Greene, built up a reputation through making free mods. Oft cited as the creator of the Battle Royale genre (named after the Japanese cult classic film about a last-man-standing battle to the death involving teenagers, made several years prior to The Hunger Games), Green first entered the scene making a competitive survival mod for DayZ, which was in and of itself a mod of Arma 2.

Green then made a similar mod for Arma 3 before collaborating with Daybreak Studios to add a “King of the Kill” mode to H1Z1.

This makes PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Green’s debut directing a standalone commercial product.

Impressively, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has only been in development for less than a year. Green and his South Korean studio, Bluehole, have been burning the midnight oil on this one, and at this rate Green suspects Battlegrounds will be ready for an official 1.0 launch in the next six months.

The success seems to be well deserved too, as our resident survivalist Ian Higton suggested PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds may be the greatest Battle Royale game yet.
